Luis Enrique happy to rule in game of errors

Barcelona head coach Luis Enrique acknowledged Manchester City’s errors were the reason for his team coasting to a 4-0 Champions League victory at Camp Nou.

Lionel Messi, back in the starting line-up following a groin injury, capitalised on a slip from Fernandhino to put the hosts in front but the Group C encounter was an evenly contested affair until ex-Barca goalkeeper Claudio Bravo was sent off after 53 minutes.

Bravo’s botched clearance and subsequent handling of Luis Suarez’s goal-bound shot left referee Milorad Mazic with little choice and Messi clipped home from the edge of the area in the 61st minute before a further mistake from Ilkay Gundogan allowed him to complete his hat-trick.

Neymar had a penalty saved by Willy Caballero but responded to round off the scoring and a humiliating return to Catalonia for City boss Pep Guardiola.

“There have been serious errors [from City] in the game and that is always a plus,” Luis Enrique told a post-match news conference. “Taking advantage of those mistakes is key and we’ve taken advantage of them.

“This is a game of errors. It has not been easy because of the quality and positioning of the City players is there.

“The golden ages of [Barcelona] have come when they have balanced defensive and offensive sections to be effective.

“And then there is Messi, who plays as if he were in the backyard.” An occasionally testing evening for a Barcelona defence featuring Javier Mascherano out of position at right-back was compounded by first-half injuries to Jordi Alba and Gerard Pique, while the latter’s replacement – Jeremy Mathieu – was sent off with 15 minutes to play.

“The success of a team’s defensive level is a matter of all players,” Luis Enrique said.

Vitoria: Benfica face three more finals

Share Benfica head coach Rui Vitoria declared that his side will fight ahead of “three more finals” to decide qualification from Champions League Group B.

A late Besiktas winner against Napoli prevented Benfica from moving into the qualification spots despite an impressive 2-0 victory over Dynamo Kiev.

Goals from Eduardo Salvio and Franco Cervi early in each half sealed the win and moved the Portuguese champions onto four points from their opening three games.

Yet Vitoria’s men are only two points behind Napoli in top spot, leading the Benfica boss to urge his team to prepare for a frantic battle to qualify for the last 16.

Benfica host Dynamo Kiev in Lisbon in two weeks’ time. “We said [this group] would go until the end and that’s what will happen,” he told SportTV.

“We did our part [but] we have three more finals ahead. Calmly, we will do our job. We are here to fight.”

Vitoria paid tribute to the attitude and tactical intelligence of his side in overcoming Kiev, who remain rooted to the bottom of Group B with just one point.

“We just won against a good team. My players are to be congratulated, we won in a very [good] way.

“The players interpreted very well what was outlined and played with a lot of personality, negating the strong points of Dynamo.

Barcelona won their last 5 encounters with Man City go

Second Half Much to the contrast of the first 45 minutes, the second half brought plenty of excitement to the anticipating crowd.

Former Barca goalkeeper bravo made sure to lift the spirits after 53 minutes when he went outside his area to stop a counterattack, but ended up getting dismissed for handling the ball on purpose well outside the box.

Pep Guardiola had no choice but to change Zabaleta for Willie Caballero in a match-defining moment which happened just six minutes inside the second half.

Ten minutes later Barcelona used their numerical advantage with Leo Messi scoring from the edge of the box with a precise low drive inside the right post.

Only eight minutes after his second goal in the game, the Argentine wizard completed his hat-trick as he latched on Luis Suarez’s assist inside the box to calmly place it into the left side of the net for a comfortable 3-0 cushion against indisposed visitors.

Pep Guardiola’s men attempted to get back into the game through Aleksandar Kolarov who produced a strong free kick just outside the area, but ter Stegen frustrated the Serbian with his excellent save.

The numerical balance was restored after 73 minutes when Jeremy Mathiey made a reckless challenge and a totally unnecessary one leaving referee Milorad Mazic with no choice but to show him the red card.

Manchester City were however well on the ground to get back up and they ultimately ended up conceding once more through Neymar. Before his 89th-minute goal, the Brazilian wasted a fine chance from the penalty spot as his build-up took the better of him and allowed Caballero to save the attempt from the white spot.

Neymar made amends with an excellent finish from inside the box to set the final score to 4-0. Pep Guardiola was given a frustrating welcome back to Camp Nou as his team are now on a four-match winless run. Statistical Overview

Barcelona 4-0 Man City: Messi’s hat-trick ruins Guardiola’s Camp Nou comeback

Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick and Neymar completed the scoring for Barcelona tonight as Luis Enrique’s men humiliate Pep Guardiola on his return home.

One-sided affair was pretty much caused by Claudio Bravo’s second-half red card which changed the game entirely. Here is our full match report:

Form Guide La Liga champions Barcelona headed into the international break on the back of the overwhelming 4-3 defeat at Celta Vigo which was a timely warning for Luis Enrique’s men.

The Catalans returned from the break with a bang as they recorded a compelling 4-0 victory over Deportivo La Coruna as a warm-up for Manchester City. Seven wins in last ten matches across all competitions is a decent tally for Barcelona, who welcomed their Premier League rivals top of the Group C in the Champions League.

Manchester City’s perfect record of ten consecutive triumph across competitions was ended by Celtic with the 3-3 Champions League draw and the Citizens have been unable to get back to winning ways since.

The 2-0 defeat at Tottenham followed prior to the international break, while Pep Guardiola’s mentor Ronald Koeman held his apprentice for a 1-1 draw against Everton last time out. The Citizens are on a downhill run and the things got increasingly worrying with their Wednesday’s slump at Camp Nou. First Half

Camp Nou crowd witnessed somewhat uneventful first 45 minutes with both Barcelona and Manchester City lacking the edge in the final third of the final, Barcelona in particular.

We did not wait too long for the deadlock to be broken however, as Lionel Messi opened the scoring after 17 minutes. The Argentine wizard pounced on a loose ball inside the box with Manchester City defenders standing like statues to allow Messi to run freely through the box and around Claudio Bravo, who was easily beaten by his former teammate.

Manchester City came to life after the goal, causing a couple of problems for Barcelona.

Citizens had their best chance after 38 minutes of play when Ilkay Gundogan swirled around the defenders and attempted to beat the keeper with a close-range shot, but Marc-Andre ter Stegen pulled a great save to keep his net still.

Citizens wasted another good chance in the dying moments of the first half as John Stones produced a quality header which went just wide of the right post.

Ancelotti calls for Bayern to build on PSV win

Share Bayern Munich coach Carlo Ancelotti called for his side to build upon their resounding 4-1 Champions League victory over PSV at the Allianz Arena.

Thomas Muller and the in-form Joshua Kimmich both found the net for the German champions in the first half, with Luciano Narsingh replying for the visitors just before the break.

Robert Lewandowski made it 3-1 close to the hour before Arjen Robben rounded off a memorable performance against his former club as he added to his two assists by heading home Bayern’s fourth goal six minutes from time.

The result snapped a run of three games without a win for Bayern and Ancelotti is hoping that his side can still catch Atletico Madrid, who continue to lead Group D following their away win at Rostov.

“We played well – that was what I expected,” he said. “We showed a good reaction. We had some problems at the end of the first half, but otherwise it was good.

“After 30 minutes of playing very well, we allowed the game to open up. We weren’t at 100 per cent for a few moments and they scored a fantastic goal from a counterattack. After the third goal, though, everything was good.

“We need to be at our best in the next few games as well to keep us in the battle with Atletico Madrid for top spot.”

Ancelotti’s assessment of the game was echoed by Robben who received a standing ovation from both sets of supporters when he was substituted with three minutes to go.

“Our start to the match was really good,” he said. “We dominated our opponents and, as a consequence, we scored two goals [in the first half]. “Our movements without the ball were not good at times and PSV created some chances. But during the second half we did it better and we dominated the match again.”

PSV head coach Phillip Cocu, meanwhile, admitted that his side had failed to cope with Robben.

“Robben can make the difference in any game,” he said. “He is an exceptional, world-class player. I’m glad he’s back from injury. These kind of players have the individual quality and vision to make the difference.”

Wenger urges Arsenal to focus after impressive win

Share Arsene Wenger urged his Arsenal side to remain focused after their dominant Champions League success against Ludogorets.

The Gunners were 6-0 winners at the Emirates Stadium, with Mesut Ozil netting a hat-trick to secure a comfortable victory and retain top spot in Group A.

Wenger was greatly impressed with his team, but is not getting carried away at this early stage in the competition.

“It will be difficult not to be satisfied,” he said. “We scored a lot of goals and kept a clean sheet.

“We were fast and dangerous. We are confident and we must stay focused in every single game. Ludogorets were impressive in the first half.

“It is important to win our home games in the battle for the first place.” Arsenal can secure their progression to the last 16 with a win against Ludogorets in Bulgaria, but, having been knocked out at the next stage in each of the previous six campaigns, gaining the seeded first position could be vital.

However, Wenger is thinking about only one win at a time as he aims to reach the next round before worrying about their potential opponents.

“Our confidence is stronger with every win, but we have to keep the vigilance as well, and the urgency to bring that into the next game,” he added.

“Let’s not be too quick on the verdict [after a big win]. We have a strong squad and a strong spirit, but you have to take care of it and keep your feet on the ground.

Bravo red halted City, says Guardiola after thrashing

Share Pep Guardiola conceded the game was “over” when Manchester City were reduced to 10 men in the 4-0 Champions League defeat to his former club Barcelona.

The LaLiga champions are five points clear at the top of Group C thanks to a Lionel Messi hat-trick and a solo goal from Neymar that added insult to injury for ragged opponents a minute from time.

City asked questions of their hosts after Messi’s 17th-minute opener at Camp Nou, but Claudio Bravo’s botched 53rd-minute clearance and subsequent handball to prevent a Luis Suarez goal left them with a mountain to climb.

“At that level it’s hard, but until 10 against 11 the game was open and we competed against a very good team with huge personality,” visiting manager Guardiola told BT Sport after a painful outing at the ground where he made his name.

“We created enough chance to score goals. After [the red card] the game was over. “Of course [Bravo] is disappointed because he is a huge professional, but it is part of the game.”

Bravo’s error is particularly damning for Guardiola, given the Chile international’s arrival from Barca heralded the departure of England goalkeeper and fans’ favourite Joe Hart to Torino.

But the former Bayern Munich boss recognised an increasing trend of individual mistakes that have stained a run of four matches without a win in all competitions for the Premier League leaders.

“It seems every game there is something like that – own goals, missed penalties and things. We have to change the dynamic,” the Spaniard added.

“I asked my players to play with responsibility and we did it. “We were there, we were in the game. We were pressing, we had the possession and we made the chances. We did it, but we didn’t take the chances and you have to do that to win the game.”

Guardiola, who left top scorer Sergio Aguero on the bench, added: “We knew from the beginning that it would be a tough group.

Simeone tempers Carrasco hysteria

Share Diego Simeone saluted Yannick Ferreira Carrasco after his match-winning goal in Atletico Madrid’s 1-0 victory over Rostov but reminded the Belgian that he still has a lot of improving to do.

Atletico dominated throughout in Russia and should have gone ahead on numerous occasions in the first half, with Angel Correa in particular at fault with two big misses.

Carrasco eventually gave Atletico a deserved lead in the 62nd minute with a powerful finish following a Juanfran cross, adding to the hat-trick he scored in Sunday’s 7-1 obliteration of Granada. But Simeone calmed any growing hysteria surrounding the 23-year-old.

“Carrasco is doing well,” he told reporters. “I’m very happy for him and he needs to continue as he is. “There’s a lot of improving he can do.”

Simeone was not entirely satisfied with the overall team performance either, ruing Atletico’s inability to finish Rostov off.

“It was a tough game,” he added. “We know what they were about. “We had chances to seal the win but we were not at the races in that sense and that made us anxious.

“Rostov defended with eight men and they closed the space down well around their penalty area.

“It’s not easy to penetrate and create many chances with such a closed defence. We need to remain grounded now more than ever.”

Monchengladbach defeat a learning curve for Celtic, says Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers acknowledged Celtic were beaten by the better side in their Champions League clash with Borussia Monchengladbach, adding that the Scottish champions are still learning at the highest level.

Second-half strikes from the excellent Lars Stindl and the equally impressive Andre Hahn secured a convincing 2-0 win for Andre Schubert’s side at Celtic Park on Wednesday.

The defeat leaves Celtic bottom of Group C with just one point to their name and former Liverpool boss Rodgers conceded his men were struggling with a steep learning curve.

“They were better than us, that’s the sum of it,” Rodgers told BT Sport. “Our players gave everything, but they were a bit sharper and quicker than us. We know that that’s the level we have to aspire to in the next few years.

“It was always going to be difficult for the team, but for us we’re learning in every single game at this level. We were just beaten by a better team.”

Both of Gladbach’s goals came directly from mistakes by Celtic’s veteran defender Kolo Toure, who has followed Rodgers from Anfield to Glasgow.

However, Rodgers was quick to shake off the assertion that the Ivorian’s faults were the reason for the defeat. “In games like that you don’t want to gift anything – we probably gifted the two goals,” Rodgers added.

“[Kolo] is a top professional. He has been outstanding since he came here.

“When you ask players to play from the back people make mistakes – but it happens and there’s no blame attached.”

For his part, though, ex-Arsenal and Manchester City defender Toure was slightly more damning of his performance.

“In this type of competition we can’t afford to make those mistakes and I have to blame myself because it was a simple action to put the ball away both times,” he told BT Sport.

“But I like to make sure the team have the ball, maybe I was overconfident.

Walcott: Arsenal´s Ludogorets rout was not easy

Share Theo Walcott claimed Arsenal’s Champions League win over Ludogorets was not easy, despite the 6-0 scoreline at Emirates Stadium.

Arsene Wenger’s men ran out comfortable winners to remain top of Group A, with Alexis Sanchez, Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all netting before Mesut Ozil fired a hat-trick.

However, Arsenal had been put under pressure by the Bulgarian side and Walcott – who netted with an excellent long-range strike – did not feel it was a straightforward task.

“The goal was fantastic, but our first aim as a team is always to keep a clean sheet,” he said.

“We know how good we are going forward, it’s about sorting ourselves out at the back – and we’ve managed to do that this season. The performances are coming.

“[Ludogorets] started the game very strongly. They’ve got a lot of technically very good players and the scoreline may say it was quite easy, but it was far from easy.

“We can be proud of that and look forward to the weekend [against Middlesbrough in the Premier League].”

Shkodran Mustafi agreed with his team-mate’s analysis, adding that he was surprised by the quality Ludogorets possessed.

“It was 6-0, but I think it was still a tough game,” he said. “[Ludogorets] played well. “Personally, I was surprised a little bit because they really played well out from the back. They had a lot of confidence and we had to deal with that first.

“Then, when we get the chances, we need to score – and that’s what we did. In the final third, we were really concentrated and we scored nearly all of the chances that we had.”

Arsenal 6 Ludogorets 0: Ozil scores hat-trick in rout

Mesut Ozil scored a hat-trick as Arsenal surged closer to a place in the last 16 of the Champions League with a 6-0 hammering of Ludogorets on Wednesday.

Having drawn with Paris Saint-Germain and beaten Basel, Arsene Wenger’s men retained top spot in Group A as they easily put Ludogorets to the sword, Ozil starring while Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also found the net.

Sanchez’s marvellous lob opened the scoring after 12 minutes, with Walcott’s eighth goal of the season making it 2-0 shortly before half-time.

Oxlade-Chamberlain struck in the 46th minute to kill off any remaining Ludogorets hope, and it was plain sailing from that point onwards. Ozil added a fourth 10 minutes later, with two further efforts from the German in the final 10 minutes of normal time completing the rout.

Arsenal will progress from Group A should they replicate the victory in the reverse fixture in Bulgaria and PSG avoid defeat against Ludogorets.

The hosts consistently found space in behind the visiting defence early on and, after Oxlade-Chamberlain fired wide, he set Sanchez away for the opener.

The Chilean took Oxlade-Chamberlain’s pass down the left channel and evaded one defender before delicately lifting a fine effort over Vladislav Stoyanov and into the far corner.

Ludogorets did threaten, however, with David Ospina required to deny Wanderson’s blast at the near post. Jonathan Cafu then rounded the goalkeeper, but spurned the chance with a tame shot back across goal.

The outside of the post prevented Wanderson from levelling with a low drive after Opsina had thwarted Virgil Misidjan’s initial effort.

Walcott found himself in the clear at the other end, only to see Stoyanov make a smart stop, yet the England winger gave the hosts breathing space three minutes before the break. Ozil appeared to overhit his cross, but Walcott checked his run and curled home from around 25 yards.

Stoyanov was called upon again prior to the interval as he kept out Sanchez’s close-range header.

Within seconds of the restart, though, Arsenal extended their advantage to move out of sight.

Some magical close control from Sanchez created a crossing opportunity for Kieran Gibbs, and when a low delivery fell kindly for Oxlade-Chamberlain, the 23-year-old tucked a finish into the bottom-right corner.

A fourth soon followed as Ozil slid home after latching on to a magnificent ball over the top from Santi Cazorla.

Stoyanov responded by getting down to repel Oxlade-Chamberlain’s volley, but he was helpless as Ozil added his second and Arsenal’s fifth.

Lucas Perez accelerated onto a pass in behind, with his cross finding Ozil unmarked at the back post for a simple finish.

And Ozil then added his third to round off the scoring as he met Perez’s ball in from the edge of the area with a fierce volley that left Stoyanov with no chance.

Key Opta Facts: – Arsenal’s win was their 100th in all European competition under Arsene Wenger. – Mesut Ozil scored his first hat-trick for Arsenal in any competition and he is the fifth player to score one in the Champions League for the Gunners.

Lilian Thuram – one of the greats

With one thing and another it hasn’t been possible until now to pay tribute to the career of one of the greatest defenders ever to grace our game. Former France defender Lilian Thuram has brought his illustrious playing career to an end after being diagnosed with a heart condition.

He has been an unsung hero for many years and as a defender hasn had the same type of adulation and praise that is afforded to the likes of Thierry Henry and Zinedine Zidane, although his contribution has been at least equally as important.

The thirty-six year old right back or centre half had been set to return to France to sign for Paris St Germain, so that he could end his career in his own country. He had struggled to maintain a regular first team place at Barcelona since he moved their 2006 and was looking forward to a few more years at senior level with PSG. He talked about wanting to be the Paolo Maldini of Paris Saint Germain.

Unfortunately for Thuram the move fell through after doctors diagnosed that he had a heart problem. Thuram brother had tragically died from a cardiac condition and whilst making the decision to retire was a difficult one, he found himself with little choice.

“It is difficult for me to continue. I would have liked to sign with PSG but I prefer not to take risks,” he said. “It’s sad to end a career like this.”

Lilian Thuram has been one of the most successful footballers in the history of the game. He has won trophies with four clubs in three countries and has won two international tournaments with his country. He was named as one of the top one hundred and twenty five living footballers by Pele in 2004 and in 2006, at the age of thirty-four, he was named in the FIFPro world XI.

Along with Paulo Maldini, the man who Thuram had wanted to emulate, and Fabio Cannavaro, he is certainly one of the best defenders to ever grace the game. His ability to read the game, his positional sense and his ability on the ball set him apart from most defenders. Add to that his pace, his ability to tackle and a real ability in the air, despite standing at under six feet and you had almost the perfect defender.

In club football Thuram won the French Cup with Monaco, the Uefa Cup, the Italian Cup and the Italian Super Cup with Parma, the Italian Super Cup and Serie A four times with Juventus (although two of those titles were stripped from them) and the Spanish Super Cup with Barcelona.

He is a veteran of well over six hundred senior appearances at the highest level and is renowned for achieving a level of consistency rarely seen from any player.

However, it is for his exploits as an international footballer that Thuram’s career will be best remembered. He made one hundred and forty two appearances for France, scoring just two goals. That number of appearances makes him France’s most capped player ever. He is some twenty-six caps ahead of his nearest challenger.

In Euro 2008 he became the player to have made the most appearances in Uefa European Championship finals with an astonishing sixteen games.

In the European Championships he reached the semi-finals once in 1996 and then famously won the tournament in 2000. At the end of that tournament he was selected in the all star representative side which contained seven of the French side.

Even greater than his achievements in the Euros, Thuram has been the losing finalist in the World Cup once in 2006 and the winner when the tournament was held in France in 1998.

The only two international goals he has ever scored came in the 1998 World Cup semi-final when France came back from 1-0 down to defeat Croatia 2-1. Not a bad time to break your duck!

At the end of that tournament Thuram was awarded the Bronze Ball as the third most valuable player in the tournament and selected as one of only four French players in the all star representative side. He was also named in the all-star team from the 2006 World Cup.

Thuram had already announced his retirement from the International stage after a disappointing Euro 2008 for France and for him personally.

It is a shame that the shambles that was France in that tournament was the last we will see of Lilian Thuram on the pitch, but that disaster cannot take away from the quite wonderful career the player from the French West Indies has had.

Cost for SAfrica 2010 World Cup stadiums shoot up

Share South Africa's 2010 World Cup preparations have been hit by overruns in stadium construction costs, but all venues are on track to be completed on time, a government official said Wednesday.

Stadium construction costs have ballooned from 7.8 billion rand (985 million dollars, 660 million euros) in 2004 to 9.2 billion.

“There has been cost overruns in a number of stadiums currently built around the country, but all will be ready in time for the World Cup,” Deputy Minister of Finance Jabu Moleketi said.

A government report indicated that the stadiums being built from scratch will be ready before the December 2009 FIFA deadline.

Moleketi emphasised that Nelson Mandela Bay stadium in Port Elizabeth, which was recently excluded from hosting the Confederations Cup in June 2009 due to construction delays, will be ready for 2010.

The Confederations Cup has traditionally been used to test a host country's state of preparedness for the World Cup.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter raised eyebrows recently when he admitted he has a Plan B should South Africa be unable to host the 2010 World Cup, although he stressed it would only become active in the event of a natural disaster. “Hosting a big event is not a new thing for South Africa,” Moleketi said.

“We have successfully staged the cricket and rugby World Cup with no problems. We need to up our ante in terms of preparedness to handle the scale of the event.”

Deputy Commissioner of Police Andre Pruis said police intelligence officers were working closely with Interpol and European police departments ahead of the World Cup.

Domenech goes for youth against Sweden

France coach Raymond Domenech on Tuesday opted for youth over experience with veteran goalkeeper Gregory Coupet overlooked in the 20-man squad for a friendly against Sweden in Gothenburg on August 20.

The 35-year-old Coupet paid the price for his first team place not being assured in his new club Atletico Madrid and his mediocre performance at the European championships where he conceded six goals during their first round exit.

Rennes right back Rod Fanni and Yoann Gourcuff of Bordeaux have been given their first call-up.

Gourcuff has returned to France after a forgettable passage at AC Milan, who have loaned him to Bordeaux, while Fanni has been called in to fill the gap left by injured Bayern Munich defender Willy Sagnol and Lyon's Francois Clerc.

Midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa, who failed to make the grade for Euro 2008, has been recalled after his impressive start to the season with Marseille, as has defender Philippe Mexes, who benefits from the international retirement of Lilian Thuram.

Barcelona defender Eric Abidal, suspended for the first World Cup qualifier against Austria on September 6, and midfielder Samir Nasri and Fiorentina goalkeeper Sebastien Frey are also noteable absentees.

Domenech admitted that the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 winners were now rebuilding following their disastrous Euro 2008.

“We know that we're in a period of transition with the end of a generation,” said Domenech, who led France to second place in the 2006 World Cup.

“The young players who came (to the Euros) experienced the bad side of things. It will be useful for the future, they know what they have to do to avoid a repeat.”

Domenech confirmed meanwhile that former international midfielder Alain Boghossian will be joining the French team coaching setup.

Boghossian, 37, who played for Marseille, as well as Italian sides Parma and Napoli, will join a staff which includes Pierre Mankowski, Domenech's right-hand man.

Mankowski retains his job but will share training sessions with Boghossian.

Domenech added: “With Sweden we're going to prepare the final two matches for the 2010 World Cup qualifiers. We mustn't think of what will happen afterwards, of my role, otherwise how can we prevent the players from thinking about it as well.”

France play a World Cup qualifier against Austria on September 6 and Serbia on September 10.

Capello makes World Cup vow

Share Fabio Capello has guaranteed England will qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Capello is in confident mood ahead of the World Cup qualifying campaign, which begins against Andorra on September 6, and the Italian believes England have more than enough quality to reach the finals.

The main obstacle to England’s progress will be Croatia, who stopped Steve McClaren’s team reaching Euro 2008 when they won 3-2 at Wembley last year.

But Capello isn’t concerned about any opponent and made the kind of bullish prediction that could come back to haunt him in two years time. “We will qualify for the World Cup. We will be in South Africa. I am sure of it,” he said. “We are a very good team. It is always the same. For us, the opponent is not important. The important thing is what we do.”

England’s failure to qualify for Euro 2008 led to claims that Capello has taken over a squad lagging behind the rest of Europe in technical and tactical ability.

But the Italian watched most of the tournament, which finished with Spain’s final triumph over Germany, and saw nothing that made him think England were inferior.

“I watched some games live and saw the rest on TV,” he said. “Only Spain played in a different style. Only the characteristics of their play was different.

“But I have a lot of confidence in my team and I think we will be okay.” Capello, who was speaking at the National Football Festival at Wembley which was organised by McDonalds, will name his squad for next Wednesday’s friendly against the Czech Republic after Saturday’s Premier League matches.

The former AC Milan and Real Madrid coach will then reveal his new captain on Tuesday.

Rio Ferdinand has been tipped as Capello’s favoured choice ahead of John Terry, Steven Gerrard and David Beckham and the England coach will give his chosen one the good news when the squad meet up next week.

Van Bommel returns to Dutch national team

Share Bayern Munich midfielder Mark van Bommel has made his return to the Dutch national team, forming part of a nineteen-man pre selection for a friendly later this month.

For the friendly with Russia, against whom the Dutch crashed out of Euro 2008, Van Bommel is the only major change apart from the expected absence of Edwin van der Sar and Ruud van Nistelrooy, who both announced their international retirement.

Van Bommel’s last match with the Netherlands was at the World Cup in 2006. Since then, disagreements with then manager Marco van Basten let to the player’s omission from the team.

New coach Bert van Marwijk, who happens to be Van Bommel’s father in law, made an end to this situation and whether the player is to form part of the final selection for the match, will be revealed five days ahead of the game, which is scheduled for August 20th. Van Nistelrooy no longer available for Dutch team

Real Madrid striker Ruud van Nistelrooy will no longer be available for the Dutch national team. This was announced by the Dutch FA on Monday.

The 32 year old forward talked to Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk earlier today, and told the manager that we would not be available any longer.

The player commented on his decision: “After studying the scheduled of Real Madrid and the Dutch team, I realized that looking at the required physical effort to perform well at that level, a choice had to be made.

“The combination of the league, cup and Champions League matches of Real Madrid on one hand and the schedule of the Dutch team on the other, is too heavy for me.

“It leaves me with no other choice. Of course you don’t easily make such decisions. I had a really good European Championship with ‘Oranje’ and I look back with a good feeling,” the player concluded.

Van Marwijk did not see the decision coming: “I had a long talk with Ruud and the only thing I can and want to do is respect his decision. Of course it’s a shame that I can’t use his qualities and international experience. I hope that Ruud will do great at Real Madrid.”

Van Nistelrooy made his first international appearance in a friendly with Germany in 1998. After missing Euro 2000 as result of injury, the player did represent the national team at Euro’s 2004 and 2008 and the 2006 World Cup.

Amauri makes his choice

Juventus player Amauri has made a choice regarding his international career, and will be representing Brazil when given a chance.

Amauri, who is about to receive the Italian nationality, needed a considerable amount of time to make a choice. This to the dismay of Brazil boss Dunga and Italian coach Lippi.

The 28-year-old made an end to the long wait, in favor of the Seleçao: “I want to play for the team of my country, Brazil. That has been my dream since I was little.”

In an interview with British Channel 4, Amauri went on to say that “it would be a great honour to wear the green and gold of Brazil.”

It remains to be seen though, whether Dunga will be making use of the forward after his recent comments: “If he is waiting to get in touch with me, he can wait a long time.”
