Giroud sees PSG as favourites for Champions League clash

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud believes Paris Saint-Germain are the favourites for their Champions League clash at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday.

The two teams have been drawn alongside Basel and Ludogorets in Group A and will be looking to improve on their respective performances in the competition last season.

Having made it to the quarter-finals in each of the last four years, PSG are most likely to take top spot in the pool, according to Giroud. After coming from behind to beat Southampton 2-1 in the Premier League with a last-gasp penalty from Santi Cazorla on Saturday, the striker thinks similar spirit will be required against the French champions.

“We knew this victory [over Southampton] would require character even if everything was not easy. The Champions League is a different competition,” Giroud told Telefoot.

“Paris will regroup [from Friday’s 1-1 draw with Saint-Etienne] and are the favourites and leader of this group. It is up to us to put doubt into them.”

PSG opted not to sign a direct replacement for club record goalscorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic following the expiration of his contract at the end of June, with Edinson Cavani entrusted with the responsibility of leading the line in his stead.

The Uruguayan has scored one goal in his first three Ligue 1 appearances of the season, but Giroud knows better than to take his counterpart lightly.

“Ibrahimovic had a very good season and it is important to them that someone takes over,” he added. Barkley will bounce back – Moyes

Sunderland manager David Moyes has backed Everton midfielder Ross Barkley to recover from the dip in form that led to him being omitted from the England squad.

Barkley did not feature at all at the European Championship, and new manager Sam Allardyce picked the likes of West Ham’s Michail Antonio and Danny Drinkwater ahead of the 22-year-old in his squad for September’s World Cup qualifier against Slovakia.

But Moyes, who introduced Barkley into the Everton team in August 2011, believes the Liverpool-born playmaker is still improving. “Ross is a really talented player,” Moyes told the Mirror. “We gave him his debut. We gave Wayne Rooney his debut at 16 and Jack Rodwell his debut at 16. We gave a lot of boys their debuts at Everton.

“In Spain, they don’t give boys their debuts so young. Maybe we’re a bit anxious here – I was hearing a lot about [18-year-old Manchester United striker] Marcus Rashford getting into the England team. But I think they’re right to just keep them going.

“Ross had a couple of spells on loan and had to go away and come back, but he’s matured into a really good player.”

Barkley will be aiming to take three points from his former manager when Everton travel to Sunderland in the Premier League on Monday evening, and Moyes said he expects Barkley to be back in the England squad before long.

“Ross will play for England many more times and I think he will develop as well because there’s another stage of his career to go when he becomes one of the senior players,” said Moyes.

A new look for 2016, this is the Julie Johnston jersey will be wearing as they compete for the trophy this summer. Ashlyn Harris, Tobin Heath, Morgan Brian, Lori Chalupny and Megan Rapinoe. “At the moment, he’s really still one of the boys who are progressing and he’s finding his way.”

Gignac ´haunted´ by Euro 2016 final miss

France striker Andre-Pierre Gignac says he is haunted by his miss during the Euro 2016 final defeat to Portugal in July.

With the game goalless in second-half stoppage time, Gignac turned a low shot past goalkeeper Rui Patricio, only to see the ball come back off the base of the post.

Portugal went on to snatch victory against the host nation in extra time, with Eder rifling home from distance to seal his country’s first major trophy.

And Gignac concedes that it is difficult not to think about what might have been had his shot crept in off the woodwork. “The first week afterwards was very tough. It will haunt me for the rest of my career,” the Tigres forward told Telefoot.

“I thought of the joy of my team-mates, had I scored that goal in the 92nd minute. It was very difficult. Footballers or former players can understand it.” Sun 11 Sep, 2016RSS Feed LAST 5 POSTS BY SOCCERNEWS

Swansea City strong despite departures – Fer

Swansea midfielder Leroy Fer remains confident of his side’s chances of a successful season despite losing a number of key players in recent months.

Ashley Williams joined Everton for £12 million before the season began, while Andre Ayew moved to West Ham and Bafetimbi Gomis signed for Marseille but Fer, who made his loan move from QPR permanent, is not expecting a relegation battle.

Swansea beat Burnley 1-0 in their opening fixture, but have since lost 2-0 to Hull City and 2-1 to Leicester City, leaving some to question whether Francesco Guidolin can improve on last season’s 12th-place finish in the Premier League.

As well as Fer, Guidolin signed Borja Baston for a club-record £15.5 million to strengthen his side, and Fer told the Guardian: “Some good names – Ashley [Williams], André [Ayew] and Bafé [Gomis] – went to other teams in the summer, that’s a big loss. But we had some new players come in and I still think we’ve got a strong team.

“To be fair, when I went from Norwich City to QPR, because QPR came from the Championship, I had that feeling a little bit: ‘Is this the right option?’ I joined and got relegated again, and that was hard for me, playing in the Championship for six months. “Swansea were struggling last season. But I could see we had enough quality.”

Fer’s career began at Feyenoord in his native Netherlands, and he played for FC Twente before moving to England with Norwich. He then made 50 appearances for QPR before joining Swansea, and he is enjoying life outside the capital.

“With QPR, I was playing for one of the smallest clubs in London, and you can do whatever you want in the city and nobody knows you. But here it’s different, they treat you like a king,” he said.

“You go out to eat, some people are waiting for a table, but we get one straight away. I don’t like that, so I say: ‘Leave it, give the table to them.’ A new look for 2016, this is the Tobin Heath jersey will be wearing as they compete for the trophy this summer. Everton After both David Moyes and Roberto Martinez failed to take Everton to the next level, it is no Ronald Koeman’s turn to try and succeed where these two have failed.

The former Southampton boss did stay without Tim Howard and John Stones, but he signed some very good players in Ashley Williams, Ibrahima Gueye, Yannick Bolasie and Enner Valencia, while keeping hold of Romelu Lukaku in spite of heavy interest in his services. Everton in turn enjoyed a very good start to the new campaign, sharing spoils with Spurs before beating West Brom away and Stoke at home, and they now have an excellent opportunity to defeat out-of-sorts Sunderland and climb to Champions League positions.

The good news is that Ross Barkley appears to have stabilised his form, whereas the back line again looks rock-solid with Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams forming the centre-back pairing. And seeing that Seamus Coleman is finally fit after recovering from injury, the Toffees have every right to feel optimistic ahead of the trip to the Stadium of Light.

Having ended a six-match winless run on the road in EPL by defeating West Bromwich, Everton will be looking for more of the same when they face Sunderland on Monday evening. Team News

Seamus Coleman should start after proving his fitness while on international duty, but James McCarthy continues to miss out.

Darron Gibson and Muhamed Besic are sidelined as well, but Tom Cleverley has an outside chance of making the matchday squad. Key Factors to Consider

Conclusion Sunderland are completely out of form and missing a host of first team footballers, so they will struggle to match high-flying Everton that are full of confidence after three successive wins in all competitions. Therefore, we are backing the Toffees to pile more misery on their former manager and his new side. Verdict: Away win

Best Odds: 11/10 Bookmaker: bet365

Prediction: Sunderland vs Everton

Verdict: Away win Best Odds: 11/10 Bookmaker: bet365 New Sunderland manager David Moyes takes on his former club hoping to record the first victory of the season and steer the Black Cats away from the relegation zone.

That will be no easy task though considering that the Toffes have enjoyed a brilliant start under Ronald Koeman, and they could climb to second with a win at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland Sunderland have been the epitome of a basement club, having spent last few years in and around the relegation zone, but they have so far managed to avoid dropping into the Championship.

New England manager Sam Allardyce did well to help the team survive the previous Premier League campaign and now David Moyes hopes to do the same.

The Black Cats have made quite a few signings this summer, adding the likes of Djilobodji, McNair, Love, Januzaj, Pienaar, Manquillo, Mika, Ndong, Denayer and Anichebe to their ranks, but it remains to be seen whether they’ve got enough quality to survive the drop.

The team have failed to impress in the opening exchanges, suffering back to back defeats to Manchester City and Middlesbrough before sharing spoils with Southampton, and they are clearly under pressure ahead of the Everton clash. With so many new signings in a short period of time, Sunderland will need some time to gel, and with games against Everton and Spurs coming up, they could struggle to put an end to their winless streak, especially with quite a few players currently unavailable for selection.

Team News A new look for 2016, this is the Megan Rapinoe jersey will be wearing as they compete for the trophy this summer. Morgan Brian, Alex Morgan, Carli Lloyd, Lauren Holiday and Ali Krieger. Jordan Pickford should continue in goal in spite of the arrival of Mika Domingues, but Victor Anichebe is unlikely to feature as he lacks match fitness.

Jan Kirchhoff is back in contention, while Lee Cattermole faces a fitness test and Brad Jones, Sebastian Larsson, Fabio Borini and Vito Mannone are out injured.

I suppose Madrid bans are unfair – Luis Enrique

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique expects Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid to remain formidable rivals despite the clubs having their appeals against FIFA transfer bans rejected.

Madrid and Atleti will be unable to register new players until January 2018 after world football’s governing body upheld punishments for both teams breaking regulations over signing youth players.

Barca suffered a similar ban that expired this January but Luis Enrique, while offering qualified sympathy to the Madrid teams, pointed out his men remained a title-winning force during the seasons covered by their sanctions.

Speaking at a news conference ahead of Saturday’s home match against Alaves, he said: “I don’t remember what I said about our sanction. What did I say? It’s unfair?

“But it did not stop us winning titles. Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid will still have great teams. It is not a sanction against the players. “You just have to accept it and continue to try and put together good teams.

“They are going to have to face it, they are going to have to do what they’ve got to do and hopefully we can have better results than them.” Atletico were held to a 1-1 draw by Alaves on the opening day of the season and Luis Enrique warned his Barcelona players to be on their guard against a similar surprise result.

“From what I’ve seen I think they’re going to play defensively in their own half of the field, closing up spaces,” he added.

Zidane blasts ´absurd´ FIFA transfer ban

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has described FIFA’s imposition of a transfer ban on the European champions as “absurd”.

Madrid and city rivals Atletico saw their appeals against a two-window suspension from registering new players dismissed by the world game’s governing body on Thursday, meaning they cannot strengthen their squad from outside until 2018.

The club have already outlined their intention to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against the charges, which relate to breaching rules in the recruitment of young players.

Zidane, speaking ahead of Saturday’s home game with Osasuna, told reporters at his news conference: “I do not understand it and it annoys me. It is absurd.

“The club want this changed quickly and I hope it will be.” Zidane’s four sons are reportedly among the players that have prompted FIFA’s sanction, which the former France midfielder finds equally baffling. He added: “My kids were born here and have spent their whole lives here, so it is absurd they cannot play football.”

Barcelona received a similar ban in 2015 but strengthened their squad significantly while the case went through an appeals process. Madrid opted against that course of action during a relatively quiet off-season window that closed at the end of August.

ZIdane insists he does not regret their inactivity and remains confident in the resources at his disposal.

Torino keen on Croatia defender

Serie A outfit Torino are weighing up January bid for Dynamo Kiev defender Domagoj Vida, according to Tuttosport.

Granata stayed without both Kamil Glik and Nikola Maksimovic this summer, and even though have some decent options at the back, head coach Sinisa Mihajlovic is determined to recruit a quality defender in the winter.

Tuttosport understands that Dynamo Kiev’s Domagoj Vida has emerged as a top target and he is reportedly interested in moving to Serie A.

The good news is that the player’s current deal is due to expire in December 2017, meaning the Ukrainian giants will probably be ready to entertain offers in January unless the centre-back signs a new deal.

Allegri confident Juve can afford to rest players

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri is confident the depth of his squad will allow him to rest players against “difficult” opponents Sassuolo in Serie A.

Ahead of the clash against his former team in Turin, the Juve manager confirmed a number of changes to his side, with Dani Alves and Andrea Barzagli to sit out while Stephan Lichtsteiner starts.

Gonzalo Higuain and Juan Cuadrado are both likely to feature and Allegri is delighted he has the option to rest key men with a busy schedule ahead. “It’s an important contest for us, we need three points now because we’re about to step into a seven-game cycle including two Champions League matches,” he told a press conference on Friday.

“Everyone has a possibility of playing because we’ll need to keep a high level of intensity, and you can’t do that with the same players every three days. Everyone’s in a good condition and I have a squad of great quality. We’ll see who’s going to play tomorrow.

“In football everything is possible, and we changed five or six players per game at times last season. Of course the team must find its balance.” Allegri foresees a tough test against Sassuolo, though, with no suggestion that he is taking Juve’s opponents lightly, regardless of his team selection.

“Sassuolo have always made things difficult for Juventus in the past few years,” he added. “The games have always been closely contested, they’re a reality of Italian football.

“This year they have the opportunity of giving it a shot in Europe, and I wish them all the best because they are a team I’m very fond of, as I am of president [Giorgio] Squinzi.”

Juventus not giving up on Matuidi

Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport has moved to suggest that Juventus are readying a fresh assault on Paris Saint-Germain hotshot Blaise Matuidi.

The Bianconeri were determined to recruit the midfielder in the summer transfer window, while the player himself was keen on moving to Turin, but the Saints refused to let him leave.

And even though PSG chiefs are adamant Matuidi will sign a new deal at Parc des Princes, Juventus will make another attempt to secure the midfielder’s services.

Considering that his contract is due to expire in less than two years, the Bianconeri plan to reignite their interest ahead of the January transfer window and offer the 29-year-old a lucrative three-year deal.

Karius recovering from second operation

Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius has had a successful operation to remove wires that were put in place to stabilise his broken hand.

The 23-year-old, who joined Liverpool from Mainz in May, broke his right hand during an International Champions Cup match against Chelsea when he collided with Reds defender Dejan Lovren.

He underwent successful surgery in early August and returned to light training on Tuesday, but did not use the injured hand during the session.

Following the second operation to remove the wires on Wednesday, Karius published a message on Twitter, saying: “Recovering from a successful surgery. Wires are removed, from now on things can only move upwards!” View image on Twitter

Luis Alberto agrees Lazio move

Lazio have completed the signing of midfielder Luis Alberto from Liverpool for an undisclosed fee.

The 23-year-old arrived at Anfield in June 2013 from Sevilla, but has struggled to break into the first team, making 12 appearances in all competitions.

All those outings came in his debut campaign and the Spaniard has spent the last two seasons on loan at Malaga and Deportivo La Coruna.

Having been deemed surplus to requirements by Jurgen Klopp, Alberto becomes the sixth new arrival at Lazio during the transfer window, joining the likes of Ciro Immobile, Jordan Lukaku and Wallace in the Italian capital. View image on Twitter

BREAKING NEWS: Mangala joins Valencia in latest City departure

Valencia have signed France international defender Eliaquim Mangala on a season-long loan from Manchester City.

The 25-year-old arrives as a timely defensive reinforcement for the LaLiga club following Shkodran Mustafi’s departure to Arsenal on Tuesday, while Aymen Abdennour is reportedly a target for Chelsea.

Mangala follows Joe Hart, Wilfried Bony and Samir Nasri in making loan exits from City on deadline day having failed to make a matchday squad since Pep Guardiola succeeded Manuel Pellegrini as boss.

He moved to the Etihad Stadium in August 2014, becoming the most expensive defender in Premier League history at the time, but a succession of high-profile errors hindered Mangala’s attempts to become a first-team fixture.

The former Porto man was part of Didier Deschamps’ France squad that finished as runners-up to Portugal on home soil at Euro 2016, though he did not make a start during the competition.

Mangala was pushed down the pecking order at the Etihad Stadium following the arrival of England international John Stones from Everton. He has set records at FC Barcelona that many thought would never be broken. His statistics speak for themselves, but there is nothing quite like watching him play.

Sergio Aguero and Manchester City have been granted a further 24 hours to respond to his misconduct charge, the Football Association has confirmed.

Chelsea sign Alonso from Fiorentina

Chelsea have signed Marcos Alonso on a five-year deal from Fiorentina.

Former Bolton Wanderers and Sunderland left-back Alonso had been linked with a move to Chelsea late in the transfer window, though the Italian club denied such reports on Monday.

However, Fiorentina announced the sale of the 25-year-old defender to the Premier League team on Wednesday, with Chelsea then later confirming the deal.

“I’m very happy. It’s a step up in my career and I think this is the perfect place for me to continue developing. It’s time for me to win some titles,” Alonso told Chelsea’s official website.

“It was an easy decision for me to make when I heard the club were interested in signing me.

“My family and close friends know Chelsea is the club I have dreamed about playing for so I’m really excited about the challenge and I’m looking forward to working with my new team-mates.”

The west London club have been looking to bolster their options at left-back following Baba Rahman’s loan to Schalke this month.

Alonso will battle with compatriot Cesar Azpilicueta for the left-back berth, though the latter can also play at right-back. He has set records at FC Barcelona that many thought would never be broken. His statistics speak for themselves, but there is nothing quite like watching him play.

Algeria release Slimani for Leicester medical

Algeria have released Sporting CP forward Islam Slimani from international duty to undergo a medical with Leicester City.

The Premier League champions have been heavily linked with a double swoop for Sporting stars Slimani and Adrien Silva before the transfer window closes on Wednesday, with reports suggesting the deals could be worth in excess of £50million.

And the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) confirmed on their official Instagram page that Slimani was undergoing examinations before being united with national-team colleague Riyad Mahrez at club level.

“Islam Slimani was allowed to leave the squad by the FAF to complete his medical examination for his transfer to the English champions Leicester,” the post read.

The 20-year-old has 23 goals in 43 appearances for Algeria and Sunday’s strike in a 2-1 win over domestic rivals Porto took his record for Sporting CP to 57 in 111 outings.

Slimani will join Ahmed Musa as an attacking reinforcement at the King Power Stadium ahead of Leicester’s Champions League debut, where he is set to tangle with Porto once more in the group stages.

Fanni, who made 166 appearances for Marseille between 2011 and 2015, joined Al Arabi when his contract at the Stade Velodrome expired.

He spent half of last season in Qatar before joining Championship side Charlton Athletic on a temporary basis. The 34-year-old has re-joined Marseille and will compete with the likes of Tomas Hubocan and Doria for a place in Franck Passi’s defence. View image on Twitter

Stoke agree Martins Indi loan

Stoke City have made their third signing of transfer deadline day with a loan move for Porto defender Bruno Martins Indi.

The Netherlands international follows Wilfried Bony and Lee Grant in arriving at the bet365 Stadium on Wednesday, strengthening Mark Hughes squad for the 2016-17 campaign.

Martins Indi has opted to switch the Primeira Liga for the Premier League after two seasons with Porto, the 24-year-old having signed for a reported £6million fee in July 2014.

During his time in Portugal he made 71 appearances in all competitions, but the lure of the English top flight proved too much. Martins Indi’s arrival comes as Stoke defender Philipp Wollscheid agreed a move away from the club, the 27-year-old joining Wolfsburg. View image on Twitter

“He is a very accomplished defender who has a lot of experience at a very high level, including playing for Holland during their good run at the 2014 World Cup. He has set records at FC Barcelona that many thought would never be broken. His statistics speak for themselves, but there is nothing quite like watching him play.

Traore swaps Villa for Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough have made their 11th signing of the transfer window with the capture of Aston Villa winger Adama Traore.

The 20-year-old former Barcelona winger has agreed a four-year contract at the Riverside, ending a 12-month spell at Villa Park that was plagued by injuries.

Villa had hoped Traore could keep them in the Premier League last season, but he only made 12 appearances for the club.

He will go straight into Aitor Karanka’s squad to face Crystal Palace on September 10 and the Boro boss believes Traore has plenty to offer.

“He is another important player and I am expecting a lot from him,” Karanka told the club’s official website.

“I’ve known him since he was a kid. He went into the national team just after I left, but I know all about him and what he can do.

“His level is higher than he showed last season, but in the right environment I’m hoping that he will show what he is capable of.” Magnificent, magical, mesmerizing, marvelous, majestic. All of these describe the mercurial Messi - and those are only adjectives that begin with "M". Yes, Lionel is one of the greats already. His numbers for club and country are astounding.
